So the whole story is about a rabbit called Hazel trying to lead a load of other rabbits to a new warren after his younger brother Fiver predicts something dangerous is going to happen. The Watership Down book ending is happy, but with a hell of a lot of darkness and sadness thrown in for good measure. There is a lot more to these particular rabbits' lives than chomping on carrots, humping, and being all cute. OK, so maybe this is a fictionalised version of the lives of a load of rabbits but, y'all, seriously. But guys, have you read Watership Down? Those little furry beasts' lives are cray. Now Is Not the Time to Panic is the heartfelt culmination of many years (and many pages) spent probing the tension between the urge to make a mark on the world and the costs of doing so-and the push-pull between art’s disorienting and generative powers. They are quirky, fleshed-out figures who seize on second chances to find purpose and connection-often through creative means. ![]() Wilson’s protagonists aren’t scratched records, doomed to replay past terrors for the rest of their lives. ![]() As if he’s never fully outgrown the hyper-self-consciousness and melodramatic aspirations of adolescence, Wilson’s fiction will have you laughing so much that you’re not prepared for the gut punch that follows. In story after story, he takes what would seem like key ingredients for claustrophobia -damaged characters prone to rumination, flashbacks, and inertia-and whips up something utterly inventive and outward-looking. Wilson’s mission turns out to be outwitting the trauma-plot trap, and doing that with antic energy. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Elizabeth day how to fail![]() ![]() Hendricks was so bullied in school that her classmates weren’t above spitting on her. By keeping quiet, Day became an adept observer of human behavior, a skill that came in handy later in her career as a journalist and novelist.ĭay has spoken to many successful people who grew up alienated or bullied at school, like American actress Christina Hendricks and Guyana-born political campaigner Gina Miller, both of whom learned how to be resilient and determined as a result. ![]() While failing to fit in was a terrible experience, it led Day to learn some beneficial skills. But given the circumstances, it was next to impossible for her to fit in, and the teasing got so bad that she succeeded in getting her parents to send her to a boarding school in England instead. Though her parents raised her to have a strong sense of individuality, at school, Day longed simply to fit in and to this end even tried to talk as little as possible. Since this was during the Troubles, the English were seen as the “hated occupiers,” and Day’s accent was enough to make her fellow students dislike her. Though Day was born in England, her family moved to Northern Ireland when her father took a job at a hospital near the town of Derry. This was the case for the author, Elizabeth Day. Primary school can be a challenging experience for a lot of kids, but if you were a young English child growing up in Northern Ireland during the eighties, it was probably extremely rough. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Gaiman marvel 1602![]() ![]() ![]() I’d like to start this mostly favorable review by first dropkicking in the baby maker the marketing wizard who approved the decision NOT to include Wolverine in the story-line. It was varied enough to feel fresh, but there were enough familiar elements to the cast that I got to do that geeky little smile/nod thing quite a bit. In my opinion, Neil Gaiman did a great job with this retelling. ![]() Of course, their backstories are quite different, but everyone (with a few exceptions) is recognizable pretty much immediately. So, basically, this is our Marvel characters in 1602. Something happened that caused the superheroes of our time to be born hundreds of years early. If you don't already know, the premise is this: And I'm mentioning that now because I don't think a casual graphic novel reader will enjoy this as much as someone who knows all of the characters. However, I simply hadn't read enough comics at that point to fully understand everything. It felt like a very cool What If kind of thing, the art was pleasant, and I understood most of what I was reading.
